The whole house remodel is a big project. It would require you
to put up with some inconvince or move out of the house for a while.
This usually takes place after someone buys a home and wants walls
moved, doors replaced, new windows and flooring through out the entire
house.
Older House Problems
Electrical: Some older houses don't have ground wires and this
could create a problem for computers and other electronic devices.
Smoke Detectors: Smoke detectors where not a building code requirement
in older homes. Plumbing: Old waste and water pipes could be corroded
and will need to be replaced. Wood Framing: For older houses this
could be a large problem if the home was poorly maintained or built
wrong. Termites and dry rot will be your major problems. This will
require you to replace the damaged wood with new. Stucco: One of the
biggest problems with stucco is no weep screed which allows moisture to
wick up the wall. This creates a problem with the wood framing and the
cement stucco causing the stucco to soften and the wood to rot.
Siding: Most siding on older homes will be wood and usually holds up
great over time unless poorly maintained. The biggest problem with wood
siding is that it has been painted to much with poor preparation and
will start to look bad. Drywall: Drywall usually holds up great unless
poorly maintained. Usually the problems will be around water leaking
near the drywall causing mold and musty smells. Windows: The older the
window the more problems. Most wood windows can't even move because they
have been painted shut. Aluminum windows that are pre 1985 usually are
single pane glass and are hard to slide.
