Here's a good example of properly tied rebar. Most engineers require a rebar to lap no less than 40 times the diameter of the rebar itself. An example of this would be if you have number four or half-inch rebar the diameter of this rebar will be one half of an inch thick. So if we multiply 40 times one half this will give as 20 inches. The lap should be no less than 20 inches from the end of one piece of rebar to the other end of another piece of rebar.
