The existing 4 x 12 wood stair
stringers had extensive wood rot where the metal tread brackets bolted
to the wood stringer. This is a problem created during the original
building of the apartments and poor maintenance over the years. The
biggest problem with this is when the stair stringer wood rot loosens
the metal bracket holding the cement stair tread enough to cause the
step to fall as someone is carrying something heavy up or down the
stairs.
