| I had to remove one truss and cut the center
of the next roof truss. This seemed like a good
idea. With my roof framing knowledge and good
looks I didn't think I would have a
problem with the building inspector.
Wrong dead Wrong.
I called for my roof sheathing inspection so
I could install the roofing paper to water proof
the room addition. This is pretty standard while
building a home. The next day I didn't have much
to do maybe a little clean up as I was waiting
for the inspector. As usual since I didn't have
much to do the building inspector arrived about
2:30 that afternoon. I felt like I had wasted a
whole day.
The Inspector started out by looking at the
plans and inspecting the structural part of the
house. The roof sheathing inspection consist of
examing all the structural building components,
including the shear and roof nailing. The main
part of the inspection is the nailing since this
will be covered up by the roofing paper as it is
rolled out to water proof the house.
Toward the end of the inspection everything
is looking great and as we are heading down the
new stairs he noticed that I cut one of the roof
trusses. He ask me if I was the one responsible
for cutting the truss. I of course thinking
nothing of it answered with a strong "YES".
Mistake or Roonnnney. I had no idea what was
coming next. He told me I would have to get the
engineer to give me a addendum to the job. This
involves paying more money and going to the city
again. Well the engineer told me that it will
take him at least a week to draw a one page job
correction addendum for the job. Well I wasn't
happy with that answer as I expressed it to him
very excitedly.
Guess what it took him two weeks because of
what I had said to him. First mistake. I got the
job correction and hurried down to the city.
Keep in mind I was still working on the house
but it was raining almost every day. I had the
roof covered with plastic while it blew off
daily. I must have spent 14 hours fixing the
plastic over that period of time. What a mess.
So I go down to the city wait for one of the
city engineers to be freed up. 45 minutes later
the city engineer tells me he was going to have
to look at it latter because he just didn't have
the time at the moment. Well I proceeded to blow
my top and explain to him how I felt. Mistake
number two. The city engineer held on to that
piece of paper for 5 days.
Oh don't think I gave up I learned mistake
number 3 while calling the city every day trying
to get that little piece of paper I needed to
get my inspection.
Well finally I got to go down to the local
building department and pick up my roof framing
correction. It was a minor fix and I had already
repaired the roof truss knowing the change was
going to be fine. I called for a next day
inspection. The Building Inspector came to the
job late of course but I had learned a valuable
lesson at this stag in my life.
BE NICE TO EVERYONE. I don't care who
it is.
I got my inspection passed and had learned a
valuable lesson. I have never forgot it.
Everywhere I go I am pleasant to everyone. Well
there are some times when I get a little upset
here and there but I remember the old saying.
You can attract a lot more bees with honey than
you can with a crappy attitude.
Lessons in life I will never forget. If you
