| It’s that time of year again, when the dusters come out and furniture gets moved around the room for a big spring clean. Larger pieces of furniture rarely get moved so now is the perfect time to check that you don’t have any pest problems lurking about making any unwanted damage to both the furniture and carpets. Typical pest problems found under larger pieces of furniture include both Carpet Beetles and House Moths and they both feed on the wool found in garments and carpets. Adult Carpet Beetles are 2-4mm long and variable black or brown with mottled yellow or white markings. This pest is mainly found in the home, food and museums. The larvae form of the pest, commonly known as the 'Wolly Bear' can reach 4-5mm in size before pupation and can cause considerable damage to products containing wool, fur, leather, silk and animal skins, and sometimes cereal based food products. Adult carpet beetles usually live outdoors on pollen and nectar, and thrive in situations where they remain undisturbed, such as under carpets, bird and rodent nests and animal remains.

When cleaning your property look out for bold patches in your carpet, and segments of carpet that look like small grains of rice.
If you see this, you have traced one of the main sources of the infestation. You should use an insecticidal dust, such as Agrothrin.
Lift and treat the underside of carpets, around skirting boards, window frames, and disused fireplaces, and other areas likely to be contacted by invading adult insects with a residual insecticide, such as Protector C or Residex P. |

House Moths are brown/golden in
color and approximately 10mm in size. The tips of the wings have a hairy appearance and the wings themselves have dark brown spots. The larvae of this pest can also cause a lot of damage to items containing wool, mohair, fur, hair, feathers or other products of animal origin. For control of this pest it is imperative to locate the source and like most pest clean thoroughly. Spilled foodstuff should be cleaned up, and other waste materials should be disposed of. Old birds nests should be removed and destroyed, and where necessary a residual insecticide, such as Protector C (water based spray) or Residex P (Dust) should be applied to floors, walls and ceiling joints and around carpet edges. Other current pest problems include the Garden Ant and the Cluster Fly. Garden ants usually nest outdoors in lawns, flower beds, beneath paving flags and at the base of walls. Homes are usually invaded by worker ants foraging for food. During the summer, winged females (Queens) and males leave the nest on one or two warm afternoons and take flight. During this flight the ants mate. Where possible, trace the trail of worker ants to the nest. If you are able to expose the nest, use the Agrothrin onto the nest. If you are unable to expose the nest, use the Protector C to treat the outside of the building. Cluster Flies are currently a big nuisance, as they are coming out of hibernation, and going outdoors for the summer months. The problem with cluster flies is that they are near impossible to totally destroy. If you have cluster flies, they tend to return season upon season. There is a solution however, that is the SWAK dispenser kit along with smoke generators. The smoke generators will kill all pests in the room, and the SWAK works continuously throughout the season automatically dispensing an insecticide, continually killing flying and crawling insects.
