Whole House Remodel Problems
By Greg Vanden Berge 2/28/2008

Are you crazy. Who wants to tear apart a perfectly good house, hire a bunch of nutty contractors and put up with a messy house for however long it takes to finish. HELLO!!!  What are you thinking. Well you are going to hear horror stories about home remodeling from all your family and friends. Doing the whole house at once has its benefits as well as its problems. The most important benefit is that when it is done you are to.

Some home owners remodel the bathroom one year and the next do the room addition of their dream. This is like living in a destruction zone for a long period of time. Mind you that sometimes it is necessary to go this path because of finances or design problems.

If you remodel your house over a long period of time you will very likely get tired of the mess and dealing with the contractors over time. I just want my home back, When will it be completed. Ah the answer depends on you. Are you adding more stuff as you see the construction project coming together. Now that you can actually see how small the room is, do you want to move the load bearing wall. These ideas will create time delays making the project drag on.

I have seem almost everything in this business. The problems and the solutions. A whole house remodel is going to be a major undertaking of sorts. Most people move out of the house so they don't have to deal with the mess and the construction workers getting to the job site at 6:AM in the mourning or the ones that stay until 8:00 PM at night because they have to be on another job the next day.

Some remodeling contractors will not even do the project unless you move out of the house. They have their reasons. If you can afford to move out and live somewhere else preferably close by your home that is going to be remodeled. This will over time be a life saver. However don't let the contractor bully you into moving out if you simply don't have the money to go rent another place. Find a remodeling contractor who will work with you.

Planning is the best way to avoid most construction headaches. The more things you can work out in advance with your contractors the better. When the job is done you will have something to talk about. Hopefully in a positive frame of mind.
