The damage to this wood handrailing was caused from moisture. The
handrail is painted with a high gloss water based paint. This is a great
choice for painting the handrail. The problem is that over time the wood
expands and contracts causing cracks in the paint. These cracks allow
moisture to seep in.
The paint being a high gloss creates a coating around the wood
sealing in the moisture. If you would have used a flat paint you
wouldn't have had this problem. The moisture has no place to go as it
collects in the wood causing dry rot.
The solution is to maintain the painting filling up the cracks with
paint or caulking. This will keep the moisture from collecting in the
wood. |
