Rectangular plank siding reminds me of the old west. I have remodeled houses that actually use the vertical siding as structural members to help hold the roof up. This siding uses no plywood and is mainly 1x building materials. The 1 x 2  gets nailed over a 1 x 6 as in the picture above.
