Installing Wood Framed Skylight Shaft

If you have a house built before 1980 your roof could be conventionally framed. This means you will be able to build your skylight exactly were you want it. You will be able to build a bigger skylight with in reason. If the skylight is going to be larger than four feet wide you will need to get a engineer involved for your safety.

If you have a newer house you probably have an engineered roof. The engineered roof trusses can not be cut with out getting the roof engineered. This means your skylight will have to go in between the roof trusses. Do not cut these roof trusses.

The picture above is a conventionally framed roof.

What is a engineered roof?
