Make A Window Larger

Removing your old window and making it larger could require a engineer if you are going to make the window a lot larger. If you have a 4 foot wide by 4 foot tall window and you want to make it  5 foot wide by 5 feet tall you will probably be ok.

The reason why I'm making a point out of this is over the years I have seen some pretty poor window installations. I have seen windows installed with 2 x 4 headers when it should have been a 4 x 8. The window header is  a important structural framing member of the house and should be sized properly.

By installing a larger window you are removing some of the wall shear value from the walls. This could cause problems to your home latter on. Use common sense as a home owner if you live in a two story house and to install your window you need to remove something that looks like it is holding part of the home. Think Twice.
