| This window was installed during a
whole house remodel in Vista. The window needed to meet the fire egress
building codes. So I had to order a larger window. The new window
was a 4-0 x 3-6. Which means it was four foot wide and three feet
six inches in height.
The original window was from 1959 and back then the different window
manufactures made different window sizes. The original window was 4- 4 x
3-9 . The problem with the height didn't matte but I did have to
make the window width smaller. By adding some 2 x 4 trimmers to each
side I was able to make this work.
The structural problem for the new window framing is having to many
connections. This could result in the drywall cracking on the inside and
the stucco cracking on the outside. To minimize the chances for cracking
on the interior and exterior we can install framing hardware.
As you can see in the picture above I installed
one strap at each window corner
framing. This helps keep the 2 x 4 framing from separating. I also
installed two metal brackets at the window header and the king studs.
This will help prevent separation between the king stud and the window
header.
The window framing hardware is a inexpensive way to minimize cracks
in your stucco and cracks in your drywall.
